This year, a group of friends and I are going through Craig Groeschel’s book The Power To Change. It’s been a really encouraging (and personally challenging) read.
I recently came across this key insight:
Good habits have pain immediately, and payoffs in the future. Bad habits have payoffs immediately, and pain in the future.
Good news, bad news. Who wants pain immediately? But there’s some solid truth there, and I’ve been able to apply this concept to many decisions and conversations with friends this week.
It’s a good measuring stick. If it’s painful now, it’s probably something worth doing. If it’s immediately enjoyable, maybe take a second look at why?
Apply it to decisions at work. Meals and food. Free time and hobbies. Alone time and distractions.
Weigh your opportunities, actions, and decisions against this measuring stick this week. I think it will change the way you look at what’s in front of you in the moment.
